$2 Modern Floor Lamp

If you have followed Mamma Loves to Save for a while you know that my family moved into a "fixer upper" split level home at the beginning of the year.  It's a total Brady bunch house and I love that my modern tastes can blend in easily.
I long coveted these arc lamps that I have spotted on television shows like Modern Family, Bethenny Getting Married?, and several others. (Do I watch too much TV?  Maybe.)  I knew a lamp like this woudl be perfec tin my living room as we have no overhead lighting in the middle of the room.
The one pictured above is $330 at Allmodern.com.

Or there is this bargain version that is $195.95 at Lamps Plus.
Allmodern.com also features this stainless steel version for just $650.
Despite the free shipping offered, this was just not in the budget right imagine my delight when I found a very similar light at a rummage sale yesterday for....
$2.00!!!!!
That's right - Two dollars -  and it works!
Don't get me wrong it's far from perfect.  I would like to cover the base and even after a good cleaning, it looks like it could use a coat of chrome spay paint up close.  (All in time.)
But I think it looks pretty good.
What do you think?
If only I could find a sleek, sectional sofa for $2 to complete the look! :)

Boots 88% off this weekend at 6pm.com

Wow!  Fall is just around the corner.  Why not be prepared with some new boots?  Ones like these Type Z Riderz Wide Calf are just $19.95 this weekend at 6pm.com.  They retail for $165!!!

How about these Fitzwell May boots, now just $19.95 too.  Retailing for $145!  Fitzwell makes super comfy shoes.

Shipping is a flat $6.95 at 6pm.com, so you might as well buy a few pairs to make the most of it.  :)

POTTY TRAINING

I am in the midst of day 2 of potty training my youngest son.  What does this mean to you?  The deal  postings have been cut short.  The minute I take my eyes of him (like to look at the computer) a puddle appears on my floor.  How does he know???

Official Walgreens Coupon Policy!

I love Walgreens.  However, for those of you who shop their deal, you know that the coupon policy seems to be  up to the descrection of each cashier.  Lucky  for me, the WAGS I usually shop is good with coupons.  However when I traveled to different locations, I have been bargain blocked many times.
Now there is an OFFICIAL Walgreens Coupon Policy on their website!  I suggest you review it, and print out a copy to keep handy when shopping at Walgreens if you have coupon issues.
My favorite part:
In the event that any item's selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item. Coupon redemption can never exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons.

This coupon is live again, yeah!  I actually broke down and bought some tortillas at Sam's Club last week.  To a non-couponer, this might seem like a good place to get a good deal.  We know better, right?!

Saving Money when Traveling with the Family

While most families have completed their vacations for the summer, and are not yet thinking about the next one, I think this is the perfect time to put serious thought into your next get away with your family so you can get the best deal and have a great time!
Since my crew just came back from vacation, it is still on my brain.  I wanted to share a few vacationing money saving pointers.

  • First, I DO think vacations should be a priority - alone with your significant other and with your entire family.  You may not be able to afford to go to Europe for 2 weeks (Wouldn't that be nice?), but most of us can at least get away for the weekend once a year.  There is nothing like quality time away from home with your family.  I started setting aside $20-$50 out of each paycheck several months ago, and was amazed at the vacation fund we quickly built.
  • Consider the age of your kiddos - My youngest son is 23 months old.  What doest this mean?  He flew to California for FREE. He at for FREE at Goofy's Kitchen (A meal that cost us $110 for 2 adults and 1 child over 3 yrs, but was so worth it!) His admission into Disneyland was FREE,  and He got into the Aquarium of the Pacific for FREE.  As you can see, we saved a lot of money taking this trip a month before his second birthday rather than a few months or one year later.  AND he still had a blast!
  • Bring your beverages - Especially when you travel with kids, you will save tons carrying your own water bottles, juice boxes, etc. with you. Most amusement parks, museums, ball parks and other attractions will allow you to bring in drinks and snacks.  Part of the fun of vacation (at least in my mind) is getting to eat out, but who wants to blow their budget on $4 bottles of water?
  • Use Restaurants.com  check out restaurants.com before you travel for gift certificates near your destination.  Since they frequently offer these at 80% off, even if you buy 1 or 2 gift certificates you don't use, the savings outweighs the expense.
  • Surf the web for coupons. - Check out the Convention and Visitors Bureau website for other coupons for restaurant and attractions.  A simple Swagbucks search could save you some $$$ on admission fees, parking, eating and more.

Happy Savings and Travels!

Step-by-Step: Craft on the Cheap + Give Away!

Guest Post by:
by Cara Heard, owner of Letter Me This, an etsy shop,
OUTDOOR CANVAS

I bought this canvas at Big Lots, they had this nice thick 12 x 12 canvas for $5.  I went on customer appreciation day and saved 20%, so I got if for $4!  I looked at Michaels afterward, and this type of canvas is usually around $18.  I found the ribbon for this at Michaels in their dollar bin.  So this is $5 in products.  I used DecoArt Patio Paints that I already had.  These make surfaces safe for outside.

I started looking for saying, other than just ‘Welcome’ and wanted something funny.  I am sarcastic and silly and like anything with a sense of humor.  I found a similar saying online and adjusted it for our family.  So I ended up with a sort of anti soliciting sign.  I live in a neighborhood where people love to come try and sell us stuff.  So this is funny to me.  Some people might find it offensive, but it is meant to be funny.  I am not easily offended!

I have been doing similar flowers on some upcoming projects and wanted to include them.  And these colors and style complement the house number sign I made and have in my front flower bed.  You can do whatever you think would complement your house and feel free to just write out Welcome.  If you aren’t comfortable with your handwriting, you could use stencils.
How To's:
    1.  Choose a canvas, preferably one you find on sale or use a coupon.  Then when Patio Paint goes on       sale at your local craft store, buy a few bottles in colors that will complement your home.
  1. Paint 2 coats of base coat.  The one picture is after one coat.
  2. After it dries, trace a few circles of varying sizes onto the side and bottom of your canvas.
  3. Add details in and around the circles to turn them into fun flowers.
  4. Add whimsical vines and leaves.  Have fun, don’t worry about perfect.
  5. For the lettering, I usually go in with a pencil first and try and get the spacing right.  I hold a ruler under my line to try and keep me going straight.
  6. Then I went back over it with a Garden Craft Terra Cotta marker in black.  I have never found those on sale, so use a coupon.
  7. You can leave it, or for extra protection spray it with a sealer.  The patio paints do not need sealer but with me living in humid environment, I am thinking it will help the canvas to look better longer.
  8. Attach the ribbon and hang on your front door.

Now for the Give Away:
Please check out my Facebook page at  and become a fan.  Come back here and leave a comment saying you are a fan.  You will be entered into a drawing for a $10 gift certificate for any Letter Me This  item!.  This is perfect for saving on holiday gifts or décor.  Plus, any Mamma Loves to Save reader that places an order before Aug 20th, will get 5 bonus entries into drawing.
Hope you all learned a little something from my guest posts!

Crafts on the Cheap

Guest Post by Cara, from Letter Me This.

Hi, I am happy to be guest posting on Mamma Loves To Save again.  Today I am going to be telling you how to save money when shopping for crafts and home décor items at craft stores.  I have had to teach myself a crash course since I started my own crafting business in January.

There are many ways to save money when you are feeling crafty.  And in fact the more crafty you are the more opportunities you will find to save.  You may ask, WHY is that?  Well (almost) every single time you check out from Michaels, they will hand you a coupon that prints after your receipt.  Usually this coupon is for 40% off a regular priced item, that expires in one or two weeks.  Sometimes it prints out a 50% off a regular priced item coupon.  Use these!  There are many items that NEVER go on sale at Michaels. For instance my picture frames, have NEVER gone on sale.  I would have spent a fortune without these coupons.

You also should go to, http://www.michaels.com/art/online/home,  and sign up for the email coupons.  Almost every week they email you the specials for the next week and most of the time there are coupons available for you to print.

Another great way to save is the special coupons they give out at the store.  They are on a flyer at the check out and the clerk puts them into your bag.  Make sure you get that out of the bag and look it over.  A lot of times these coupons are for a certain percent off of your ENTIRE purchase.  These usually are only for a certain day, for a short time period.  For instance I received one last weekend for 25 % off my entire order this past Sunday evening from 4-8 pm.  This coupon INCLUDES sale items.

And some Michaels stores, let you stack coupons, as long as they are all from different sources.  So if you bring in one of the previously printed coupons, a coupon from your email and a special coupon you can really save money.  Note that not ALL employees will do this, and I have found karma is your friend in these instances.  The nicer and more pleasant you seem the more likely the cashier will help you out.

If you are a regular coupon user, you know that the cashier can make or break you.

So from looking at the flyer for this week’s sales, I see that Artist’s Gallery wrapped stretched canvases are on sale for 50% off.  In my business, I use these like crazy.  So I will be stocking up -  50% off the regular price and then I will get to take an extra 25% with my coupon.  That is GREAT!  So if I buy a 10 pack of 8 x 10 canvases that I regularly would have to pay $19.99 for, they become $10, then after I take an extra 25% off they become $7.50!  That is only $.75 each!!!  That helps my bottom line out tremendously, especially since I am still paying retail for my items.  I did recently take the plunge and applied for a tax ID number so that I can buy some items wholesale and help bring my costs down.  A pack of 10 canvases may be excessive for you, but if you need one canvas for a project the same logic would apply.

AC Moore,  and JoAnn Fabrics, both have coupons online a lot of the time. So always visit their sites or Google the stores and check for coupons before you head off to shop.

Now to the mother load of crafts and home décor, Hobby Lobby.  Oh, how I love thee!  The best thing about Hobby Lobby is that if what you want isn’t on sale today, check back next week.  They run items 50% off ALL the time and they seem to be in constant rotation.  And they have a pretty good clearance section usually too.  It is usually along a back wall or down an aisle in the corner. I spend most of my business’ money in Michaels, but I can spend hours perusing Hobby Lobby.  And spend a lot of my personal money.  They don’t offer a lot for me as far as what I sell on etsy or Facebook but they have great fun products.  Hobby Lobby also puts coupons online, so check for those.

And if you live in a teeny tiny town like me, in the middle of nowhere, Hobby Lobby now has an online store to shop.  This has come in very handy for me when I do DecoArt projects. I recently became a design consultant for them.  DecoArt has a great site, which offers you many craft ideas and has plenty for beginners as well as more experienced crafters.  Check out http://www.decoart.com/Projects/ and look through their project library.    Two of my projects are featured right now, there is an artist drop down menu, look for Cara Heard.

Another great thing about saving on craft supplies, is saving at gift giving time, especially around the holidays.  Homemade gifts are personal and thrifty.  Check Mamma Loves to Save for a tutorial tomorrow on how to make a special one of a kind gift for your loved ones on the cheap!  If you are not into crafting but love one of a kind, hand painted items please check out my etsy shop and my Facebook page
